Something a bit different

"The Conductor" by Michelle Castles, in situ at Sedbergh School.

Regular visitors to Rheged may recognise the work of Michelle Castles – her sculptures featured outdoors on the approach in 2013 as part of the Rheged Sculpture Trail. 2020 will be the first time that Michelle’s amazing wire sculptures are part of the Cumbria Life Home & Garden Show and I am really pleased she is joining us this year.

Michelle’s studio is just down the road near Ullswater but her work has been shown all over the world. As her website says, she specialises in observing the human form and capturing its essence in wire mesh but that’s just part of it. Her sculptures are simply breath taking with lots of detail and a sense of movement too.

Her work has featured in show gardens at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and elsewhere and I hope that her stand at the Show will give visitors plenty of ideas for how to create a wow factor with sculpture in a garden. We’re lucky to have so many great artists working in and around Cumbria so there's lots of inspiration available and I’m hoping that the range of styles on display at the Show will mean there’s something for everyone.

You can find out more about Michelle Castles and her work at www.michellecastles.co.uk and look out for other sculptors and artists such as the Withy Crafters, Art and Garden, Smith & Pulse and Carolyn Marr at the Show.
