Cumbria Life Home & Garden Show 2017

From Hygge to Shinrin-yoku

The teams from Wildroof Landscapes and Buzy Lizzie have been planning our stand for the Cumbria Life Home & Garden Show, coming up at Rheged later this month (18th & 19th March). As one of the curators of the Show, it’s too easy for me to get tied up with everyone else’s requirements and last minute plans and then realise that we need to make an impact with our own stand too!

We’re taking as our theme for this year, a Japanese ‘forest bathing’ approach. You might have read about Danish hygge – comfort, cosiness and warmth – but forest bathing (or shinrin-yoku in Japanese) is a refreshing, green and invigorating alternative.

At its simplest, a forest bathing trip involves being amongst trees for relaxation and recreation. Studies in Japan and the US have demonstrated both psychological and physiological benefits with the latter probably coming from inhaling volatile substances called phytoncides which are emitted by trees. These are essential oils, such as α–Pinene and limonene. We’re working on some ideas for planting Cumbrian gardens that build in some of the forest bathing ideas, especially where clients have mature trees already in place but want to add new planting to create woodlands to enjoy for many years to come. And taking up that Scandinavian aspect as well, if you want to take the bathing experience one step further then you can always build a sauna cabin in your garden!

So look out for us at Rheged. We’ll be in the Mountain Hall and there should be plenty of greenery around us for you to enjoy.
